The Support Members Give and Receive

Members of the Work of Christ experience personal support in lots of different ways. On this page members write about the different aspects of community life they find expecially helpful.

Since we became involved a few years ago, the Work of Christ Community has had a profound impact on our family. My family’s first involvement began with CYA (Christian Youth in Action), the community high school youth group. My husband and I realized that our teenagers needed a peer group with values similar to what we were teaching them at home. They love attending the weekly meetings that include prayer time, sharings, and socializing. They also attend retreats, go on mission trips to Honduras or Mexico, and participate in service projects in Detroit, Lansing, and at a summer camp for children. There is strength in numbers, especially with teens: they don’t feel odd or alone in living the Christian life.

I am very grateful for the many years of community members’ service and dedication in establishing the CYA. All the parents work together in volunteering to serve for different projects, and since there are so many of us, it makes for light work. In fact, the once or twice a year that I serve, I have so much fun and so thoroughly enjoy the teens, I’d love to do more! They are such a joy!

As our family became more involved with the Work of Christ Community, we were quite impressed with the way all the families supported each other in not only the spiritual aspects of life, but also the practical, physical aspects. Even though we are a community of people from different traditions, we all have the most important truth in common: loving God with all our hearts, with the hope of attaining everlasting happiness in heaven.

Jen Galer

My name is Jen Galer and I’ve been a member of the Work of Christ Community for over 25 years.  I discovered the community while a student at Michigan State University.  Here were Christians living their beliefs every day of the week and that’s what I was looking for.  I met my husband here and now my life, while certainly full of challenges, is a bit like life in Mayberry.  Let me elaborate…

We live in the heart of the city of Lansing.  On our street are eight other families and many single members.  We’re like a big family: every day we take care of each other; watch out for each other; help, correct, and encourage one another.  We have our difficult moments like in any family, but the great (and challenging) thing is that we’re in each other’s lives no matter what.  My children have many friends they have known since birth.  Community relationships so enrich our lives that years ago, we decided my husband would commute two hours a day to work rather than move away from our Christian “family.”

When tragedy struck, I became even more aware how God has blessed us through the Work of Christ.  Three years ago our 17-month old son was run over by a car.  From the first instant of the accident and throughout what followed, our community family was there for us in every way.  Our other children were cared for, all household chores were handled, those with medical training helped us make decisions, people prayed with us as we struggled with fear and guilt, and prayers upon prayers were said on our behalf.  God is merciful and today our son is perfectly healthy.  Through the love and care of our community family we know the love of God more fully.

George DeWaters

When I finished high school I was really looking forwards to going to Lansing and becoming a part of University Christian Outreach (UCO) an outreach of the Work of Christ Community.  I spent two years at Jackson Community College and transferred to Michigan State University my junior year.

My first semester at MSU, I lived with a group of seven guys in a UCO house on Spartan Street.  This was a really great way for me to meet new people and get acclimated to the big university.  Part of the UCO household commitment was praying together as a house four mornings a week.  We also had dinner together four nights a week.  We did many activities as a house including many fun UCO events.  This was a great time of brotherhood and growing closer to God.

As a member of UCO I have experienced many opportunities to go deeper in my relationship with Jesus Christ.  Through prayer meetings, men’s group, Christian formation program, household and other service opportunities I have really grown closer to God.

After three years of school up here Lansing I really am grateful to God that he brought me to a place where I could have good Christian support and grow in my relationship with him.  Now I’m a member of staff for UCO and I want to give back to others the blessing that UCO has been for me.
